Snapshot of HIV / AIDS in Australia

Since the first confirmed case of AIDS was diagnosed in 1982, the number of HIV/AIDS notifications spiked in the 1980s, reaching a high of 2,411 notifications in 1987. ​​But with increased awareness, the number of new notifications began to decline to a low of 719 in 1999.

After a low of 711 ​in 1999, the number of notifications ​has increased in Australia. There were 1,081 notifications in 2014, the highest ​number since 1993, though the levels have relatively stabilised in the last few years.
