How hospital wait times work

Emergency department: Patients in emergency departments are triaged by urgency, with maximum waiting times for each category.

Emergency

10min

For example:
  • chest pain (likely heart-related)
  • can't breathe
  • major fracture
  • very severe pain

Urgent

30min

For example:
  • shortness of breath
  • persistent vomiting
  • abdominal pain
  • severe cuts

Semi-urgent

1hr

For example:
  • possible fractures
  • moderate pain
  • minor head injuries (no loss of consciousness)
  • difficulty swallowing
  • possible joint infections

Non-urgent

2hr

For example:
  • minimal pain
  • minor symptoms
  • minor wounds
  • ongoing conditions

Elective surgery: Patients who need “elective” surgery (on another day) are also triaged as either urgent (needing treatment within 30 days), semi-urgent (within 90 days) or non-urgent (within 365 days).
