What is homeschooling?

Homeschooling is the education of the child outside a formal institution, such as a school.

This means it's not distance education (where students are given structured lessons by a school to do at home). It's not flexi-schooling, which offers flexible pathways for students who are disengaged and excluded from mainstream education. Nor is it part-time school.

In practice, it means education is organised and facilitated by a parent or a family member. Children may also have tutors or specialist teachers, but parents are responsible for their child's education.

Homeschooling is legal in every state and territory in Australia. Families must register with their state or territory education authority and report annually.
